[An edited version of this text also appeared in the Montreal Gazette] I have an ask of my fellow progressives: get behind David Cameron. At the end of the debate and vote in the British parliament tonight (which expressed opposition to the government’s desire to intervene militarily in Syria), Prime Minister David Cameron said the following:
Some of the damage that the Harper Conservatives have done is semi-permanent. – We may never again have a long-gun registry; no government in the next thirty-fifty years will want to take that on. What a double-waste: the initial mismanagement cost us $1 Billion, then the Harperites flush that down the toilet too.
To those still clinging to the trope that the Harper Conservatives are “good fiscal managers”: Let’s remember that — way before the financial crisis of ’08 that they now hide behind — they proceeded to waste away budget surpluses that Canada had been having for the prior 9 years, and this, *in two short years*.
